When you put the new shifter on, put a nice size bead of black silicone around the tranny when the shifter meets the tranny. This will help keep then tranny fluid in Because you'll have to do this, that is why you can't get the old shifter off. It also has the silicone on there. Just get a nice pry bar and wedge it in there. It will take some effort.
