Could it be running too rich ? Your A/C runs off vacuum, so if it's running rich and you're getting blow-by, the fumes will in turn go into the vacuum hoses and open the vents, and you could actually smell the gas.

Just my .02, again, I'm not for sure, so don't quote me on this.
