i had the same probl. when i put in a melling HV oil pump in my 89 5.0 w a stock pan. after ruining 1 pan i noticed that at the bottom
of the oil pump cover that the 4 bolts for the cover had a much larger head on them comming in contact w/ the pan so i used the 4 smaller head bolts off the original oil pump cover & it went on fine. its that easy. just use the smaller head bolts & put that sucka back together!
