Long time ago, I had a 58 Ford Fairlane. It was as stock looking as stock looking gets ... right down to stock hubcaps. It had a big block FE motor in it. I "claimed" to everybody i met it was a basically stock 352 (all FE blocks have 352 cast very visably into the front of the block) ... I told them it was a very mild almost stock cam in a stock car. The Car was an old race car my brother had abandoned ... if you looked in the glove box you were looking at the steering column ..nothing under the dash at all, empty ..the rain came into the car through the outside cowl grill if i didn't cover it. The hood had all the structure cut out, nothing but sheetmetal left. the back windows were fixed plexiglas. The car was stripped totally. That "352" was actually a 406 with heavly worked 427 heads, it had tri power (3, 300 CFM Holleys) on a Ford aluminum manifold. It had a Ford NASCAR short track cam in it made to pull out of corners and it just oozed low end torque. It had 4:56 gears. It had 13 to 1 compression (you could stand 10' behind the car and the exhaust would make your pant legs flap.) It was a stop light warrior ... all low end ... I totally destroyed people here in So Cal stop light to stop light for about 6 years .... when i finally wore the thing out and kissed it goodbye, everybody in town still thought it was a basically stock 352 in a big heavy 58 Ford.
Point being, Hotrodders are the biggest Bullsh***ers on the planet next to maybe fishermen (i'll tell you about the world record Bass i caught sometime) ... take everything you hear with a grain of salt ... the crap you read in the hot rod books ... do you really think they are gonna spend 10's of thousands of dollars making their car competitive then tell you exactally what they did so you can go fast as them without spending all that time and money ???? lol
Use some logic ... if you could go low 12's in a basically stock 302 then my old 58 would have been running low 9's and all the guys on this board with fairly modified 302's would be running mid 10's easy. I'm stickin with my original reply ... when pigs fly ... you'll never convince me its gonna happen.
