I've heard that the Autozone thermostat is the best one besides the OEM. I live in Pittsfield which is over the mountain from Lebanon Valley Dragstrip, about 45 min. from Albany NY. I have an older block, a '69 to be exact. The water pump that originally came with my block had the pass. side outlet to the rad. The ones we use have the outlet on the driver's side. It doesn't sound like the problem to me but since you are using the same fan as me, I'm beginning to think that it's either the thermo. or the water pump.
