Default sidewalls?

How can you tell when the sidewalls are shot? Is that when the *** of the car begins feeling unstable? I mean, I know a fast Mustang can get unstable when going down the track...but when my slicks got old if I didn't have the exact precise pressure in both tires...the back end of the car would kind of sway back and forth...occasionally forcing me to let off the gas so that I didn't cross the center line or crash into the guard rail. Kind of like the sidewalls had lost their support...what little bit slicks have. I'm buying new ones before my next outting to the track though. I've turned to many wrenches to crash my 12sec. stang into a wall, lol!
