RR's have WAY too much play, even when shimmed.....ideas??????

I just got mufflers on my car and I noticed that the RR"s were clattering. I figured they just needed re-adjusting because the lifters pumped up. So I let it warm up and took off the driver's side valve cover and notice that the #7 cylinder on the exhaust side has a LOT of play. Even with 1 "thick" shim under the pedistal I still have like 3/16" of gap between the roller tip and the top of the valve.

This wasn't like this before, when I built the motor!!!!

They are Crane 1.7 pedistal mount RR"s, and I'm running a flat-tappet cam.

ANY clue's as to what might be going on here? I drove the car for about 50-60 miles (including several races) open headered, so I couldn't hear the clattering.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More shim (thicker) under the rocker pedistal means more valve lash. You may be able to properly set your lash with a thinner shim or no shim. Possibly your lifter is junk.

Lifter could be collapsed. Also make sure the push rod is not bent.

Same here. Also, if the cam was not broken in properly, you might have lost a lobe. Lets hope its something simple like a lifter or pushrod.

pushrod don't appear bent, but tip wear is ALL to hell on the rocker side. I'm gonna tear it down tonight and see if it's a lifter........I hope it's not the cam. Both the lifter and the cam are brand new.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the loose rocker arm...but I had a pushrod tip get hammered up pretty bad on the rocker side as well. I pulled the pushrod to find out that their was no oil getting to the top of the pushrod to lubricate the rocker tip! The oil passage was actually clogged with a chunk of gasket or something. Just something to keep in mind. You may want to take a peak down the oil passage of any pushrods you may pull.

I've seen pushrods clogged from the factory. Every pushrod we install get thoroughly checked, washed and blown out before being installed in the motor.

That's a good thing to do. I'm sure a lot of people overlook that when building a motor, and take it for granted that their pushrods are perfect right out of the box.

I held every pushrod up to the light to make sure it wasn't clogged before I put them in. They were to go. They're not clogged now either.

well, I tore off the intake and inspected the lifters. They look find to me.

Wouldn't the bottom of the lifter be all fucked up if I lost a lobe?

It's starting to look like a collapsed lifter, but even it it was collapsed would that account for the 3/16" of play??????
