No one heard of this?

Well, I took the shifter off today to see what was going on. I get the shifter off and the part that the ball fits into is just sliding up and down the shaft. It didn't have any resistence to it at all.

Does this mean my tranny is shot or just the clutch is junk? I was having a vibration right before this happened. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate your help. I want to know what I'm looking at in ways of repairing it. Otherwise my stang is just going to be sitting in front of my parent's house. Thanks!
