I've had a 85 GT and a 84 GT and I cannot remember any return lines except for the emissions crap but to my knowledge nothing returned to the gas tank.
Where are you looking at? There should be two line on the pump. one from the tank and the other to the carb. Your car is carborated right, meaning it wasn't converted.
