They're nice to have, but you don't NEED one.
My 93 coupe has a 255lph pump and the stock regultor and it runs fine. I'm headed down to JMS in Mobile AL for a couple of dyno runs Monday. I'll let you know how the air/fuel mixture looks. -Josh, aka the tireburner
