It's because of interference. Here's how I made my own battery cable. I took 14 12 guage wires , stripped the ends and wound them together on both ends. Then I mummified the whole thing in electrical tape. Instant battery cable!
A lot cheaper than buying a spool of battery cable.

The reason for the short ground is long wire builds resistance and this lowers your outgoing and incoming charge. Makes the whole system less efficient.
