Imagine dipping a fish into liquid and pulling up just the bones.

Its going to eat every piece of rust off the body. You may not have a body left. Then you still have to treat the metal before paint.

I like sanding to bare metal and using something like POR-15 rust preventitive to treat and seal the metal.

You can use any type of paint over it.

We painted a rearend with POR-15. Then we beat it with sledge hammers and it did not chip.

Ask you local body guys what they use.
