There are plenty of roads and cars in this country that are safe at 125. I would have expected him to receive a citation for reckless driving, but telling him he should go to jail while knowing little about the context is pretty dumb. |

He probably said he should have gone to jail, cause he should have. The police rarely drive that fast, and even when they do there is generally a good and just reason. Not sure about your states, but he would have gone to jail here, since that is considered reckless driving - an offense you get arrested for, not a ticket.
I am sure there are a lot of cars that drive well at that speed. Those speeds should be kept on a safe track or course. I love driving fast, but at that speed, anything comes in the road..and ur r done....not gonna be stopping in time. Ryan

If im not misstaken 20mph over in Texas is a direct ticket jail. no questions asked. i have been pulled over a couple times, but for nothing other than the coppers wanted to check out my car. i dont mind the cops, i think they are fair and do their job.. sometimes they can be alittle unfair, but i imagin they get tired of seeing the same ol things. like a 16-20 yr old kid going to fast with bad judgement. i know when i was 16 i couldnt control a hotwheel car, none the less a gt going 125.
just my thoughts -mh

I am 17, almost 18, and had my fair share of harrasment by local police. I have my mustang, yes it does have shiny welds and an nice low rumble exaust, but that doesnt mean i am out there to race every thing i pull up agenst. The car is still in black primer, but i like it that way, but for some reason when i am travinlg with a group of cars, no no, the speeding buick next to me doesnt get pulled over, i do. I have had state cops let me off with speeding warnings before, because it was the same case, no one else around me, and me just havin some fun. Not being reckless, just, speeding. Local pigs will pull kids in my town over for anything they can. I pulled out in traffic, at like 11pm, and hurried to get up to speed (basicly floored it til i hit 50 in a 45) and the lights went on and i was accuse of trying to race the car next to me, which by the way, was a bonneville. Had to go to court and get that one kicked out too. Local cops can be pains in the ass.

First of all hello to everyone. I am new to this forum. Second of all, I can't help but feel pitty for a poor sixteen year old that is being harassed by the local cops.
I have been involved in public service for the past fifteen years. I have been in emergency medical services since 1990, and "gasp", a law enforcement officer for the last two years. I personally drive a 01 Mustang GT, with a manual trans. I can tell you it can take on a Crown Vic and not break a sweat. But that doesn't mean I "take it to the strip" every time I start it up. As a sixteen year old, first of all you are still too dumb to realize how dangerous you are inside a 3000 plus pound speeding bullet. When you see the damage that can be done to an unsecured human body in a crash obeying the posted speed limit, and still decide to drive it like you stole it, you deserve the injuries and or death you will bring to your self. When you hurt someone else and walk away uninjured, I have names for you that I will keep to myself. I would love to be there to see you when this happens. During training as well as in real life, I have witnessed some really nasty car crashes. See they are mostly not accidents, but crashes. An accident would be something that you could not avoid. Showing off to your little girl in a car you should never be able to sit in in the first place, you are only asking for trouble, and a mis hap at over a hundred, well the only accident would be the one that allows you to do it again. Laws regarding traffic are in place to protect the "good, law abiding citizens", from people like you who are reckless and do not know how easy it is to take a human life. See, you can hate the local cops all you want, but at the end of the day, us cops are trying to prevent you from hurting or killing entire families, such as mine, and all the others on this post that value life. There is a time and a place to use the available power in your car, but that place is not the local roadways. Laws are there to try to prevent death, even those of you who are going to object to this message. Now, as far as your "story" about this one particular cop, if he did what you said, as you say, he was out of line. But, are you sure you didn't see this at the movies? I do believe I have several times. One last thing, if you keep your attitude in check during a car stop, and show respect to the officer, even if the officer is not showing it back, that will make you the better person. It may also earn you less tickets, and make you less notorious to the locals. I don't stop cars like yours just because they look fast, but I do if they drive the way you do. I have more to say on this, but I think I have said enough for now. |

If going more than twice the speed limit on the interstate is not a jailable offense then I don't know what is on the road. It's beyond reckless regardless of the situation. You'd go to jail in any state I've ever lived for that speed. I'm not saying he 'deserved' to go to jail, or trying to be all high and mighty. I'm suprised he didn't get put in the back of troopers car, honestly.

Yes, you can control yourself and avoid driving 125mph. You can control the urge even better by purchasing a Ford Explorer with a V6 like I did. I don't know if it would do 125mph off a cliff. I can't fault your logic regarding speed vs the ability to react to problems or the fact that driving 125mph is inherently more dangerous than driving 55mph. How much more dangerous is debatable based on the conditions, driver, and vehicle.
While it may be true that the speed limit is 55 at night in Texas (it was the last time I rolled through on the road trip to Phoenix) that doesn't necessarily mean the true safe driving speed for all vehicles is 55mph. There are places around here in Minnesota that have a 30mph speed limit despite having no residential driveways connecting to the road, and the road being divided by a concrete median with 4 lanes of traffic. It's been indicated that reckless driving is an offense for which you are arrested in Texas. It comes in two separate, but considered generally equal forms in Minnesota. Careless and Reckless. Much like DUI vs DWI. Anyway, I digress. I would agree that based on reckless being an arrestable offense, I would have expected him to have a ride to jail in the back of a police cruiser. |
