I took my 302 in for a rebiuld, the machinist looked at the block, it had D4 as the first couple of letters, he said D stands for the decade, 70's and the 4 stood for the 4th year so 1974 is when the motor was made, I am assuming that C stands for 60's and E stands for 80's.
