![]() Before you beat yourself up too much, or possibly buy into another problem, why don't you try to figure out why this engine smokes? Did you do a compression check? Was it sitting for a long time? Did you run it long enough to be sure it wasn't just burning off accumulated oil in the cylinders from sitting? Have you checked the valve stem seals? These are notorius for hardening and cracking away on the 289, and they are very easy to change. Try to find out where it's getting the oil to burn before you write it off.
