I just REALLY don't like that bottom ring having NO support above the wrist pin. Evidently (when it was in Iowa) the ring rotated around so the bottom of the 3 piece ring had it's gap out there unprotected. With me? Well, it bent down and scratched the heck outta the cylinder wall, pretty bad. I'm just worried that's gonna happen again.

Yes, 5.400 rods in this one. My 410 cid pistons have the rings pushed way up, and away from the wrist pin. This is the first 347 I've had intimate knowledge of, so maybe I'm just worrying about nothing. ?? We shall see.

UPDATE: Talked to tech support at Ford Racing (they built the stroker kit) the guy attributed the piston ring gap issue to the last guy that put it together not paying attention. DO NOT put the oil control ring gap above the wrist pin. (DUH!) He said I'm good to go there, .030" end gap and we're even good for 150hp worth of snow.

So, I said to myself "Self, (that's what I call myself when I talk to myself.) Self, put Mr. Nasty cam back in, and let's see what we can make a 347 do. So it's back in, the X303 has about 12 tubes worth of grease on it and saranwrapped, with matching numbered grease covered roller lifters.

Heading out now to degree Mr. Nasty in. Now all I need are some rockers, and it's GAME ON!

Mr. Nasty is degreed in, a whole .7* off. Shucks.

Valve clearance is:
1.6 Rockers
.215 Exh.
.143 Int.

1.7 Rockers
.177 Exh
.105 Int.

Now the cam is ground for 1.7 rockers (Cam Motion has it right on the spec sheet), but I'm not sure which ones to go with here. Is the extra lift worth it? I've been told that .100 is enough clearance on the intakes, but .105 seems awfully close to me at 7500 RPM.

What do you guys think?

.105 on the intake should be fine. Just make sure you have your stuff setup right. Where did you install the cam? You could back it up a couple few degrees and gain p~v on the intake, but you will lose a little on the exhaust.

I installed the cam straight up at 0*, centerline is ground at 108.5 and it's actually at 107.8

I thought about the 4* retard/advance thing, but wasn't sure which way to go, if any, so I left it alone. Still easy enough to change, don't have the front cover on yet.

Depending on how much compression you have, I'd tell you to advance that thing, but youre kinda out of room on the intake side. In which case I'd just leave it alone.

DYNAMIC compression is guestimated at 11.43:1 Static is up around 13.2:1 so I see what you mean there.

Ran some tests on my desktop dyno, and with 1.7 rockers, and the cam retarted 4* is when it made the best power. 579HP at 7000. With the 1.6 rockers, and the cam at 0*, it's making 573HP at 7000.

So Me thinks due to the close tolerances on those pistons, and we're only talking about 6 HP, I'm gonna go straight up on the cam, and 1.6 rockers.

Sound logical?

Here she is all "mocked" up:

Good luck with the engine from a fellow canfield fan.

I beat everyone else with a stock block regardless of what heads they are running AFR 185's Trick Flows it doesnt matter. The air gets as bad as 6400FT here where I am at and I still go 106mph.

I would be going 110-112mph at sea level in a full weight car and I weigh 220 lbs.

I couldnt be happier with my Canfields.

These are even 1-off Canfield heads. This is the first casting of the new design for the 215 heads, should be bad-azz.

USED to be friends with the owner, but we had a falling out. LOOOOONG story. So my new bad-azz Canfield heads will probably be sporting a set of TRICK FLOW valve covers! <WEG>

It's Alive! Fired her up today, and I gotta admit, she sounds pretty pissed off. I went with the 1.7 rockers, and the cam straight up at zero. She gets hot REALLY fast, so I have to deal with that, but other than that... Woo Hoo!!! If it runs as good as it sounds, it might just become a "temporarily permanent" engine. hehehehhe

Here's a crappy phone pic:

I still have that cam, the 544/548 one. It did REALLY well on my 302.

That's not the specs for "Mr. Nasty" though. hehehehehe
