Yes, front brakes are supposed to drag some, even when you're foot is not on the brakes. It's funny that you wanted to beat on them with a hammer. Although I don't see how beating a brake pad would reduce it's size. But...that's what we're here for.

lol, im sorry about all these dumb questions....but i just got this 88 gt last fall because i wanted to get into cars and this is my first time ever working on one, i am trying to learn and do as much as i can by myself.....thanks again for all the help fellas, its much appreciated
