Ignition flowchart:
Using a home made test light (use any auto bulb, like a turn signal bulb, and attach two wires), check for voltage at the coil with the key on.
None: check the ign. switch.
Voltage: ground a spark plug attached to a plug wire attached to coil & crank engine.

No spark: replace coil.
Spark: repeat with plug attached to plug wire w/ all wires attached to cap.

Spark: verify firing order and relationship between cap and rotor.
No spark: try different wire.

Spark: replace plug wires.
No spark: check distributor cap and rotor.

As far as your carb gasket goes, clean off the silicone and check the throttle plate and manifold with a straight edge. Use a new gasket. Never apply silicone to a carb base gasket. Verify the float level and your fuel pressure.

With these things set, it should run. Once it's running, set the idle mixture and idle speed. Use a vacuum gauge for this.

Take care
~Chris
