Mulally has a great record...

Bill Ford, doesn't.

Ford, the company, needs to separate itself from Ford, the family. So long as the Ford family allows this guy to do what he needs to do, he'll be alright. If they think that he's going to be a puppet, it's a wasted opportunity and one that Mulally won't sit around for.
