Ah I guess you folks haven't found much for the 2.3L. There's lots of stuff you can do, for $500-$1000! I'll just name a few things: bigger cat-back exhaust and high flow cats, header (Pacesetter makes a smog-legal one), cam, head work (Esslinger will port & polish your iron head and install big valves for $739, and they have an aluminum head for $1000 which offers 25 hp over stock and 25 lbs less weight), porting work on the intake, you could even go so far as boring or stroking (or both) your engine, or even a complete turbo swap (you can do this for $1000 or less)....plus there's always the old standbys that have already been mentioned like a K&N and gears, plus ram/cold air induction helps too. Also lightening up the weight in the car can help a lot.
