Depends on the year model 302. One from the 60's or 70's is a direct swap. If your buddy is using one from the 80's or newer ( 5.0 ) then the following are some key issues...
The swap is pretty simple...as long as you use an automatic transmission. The c-4 is a direct bolt in, and even the late model aod will fit with a kit to install it. Most of the parts from the 289 will bolt up, but watch out for the harmonic balancer/pulley. You have to use the late model flywheel and harm. balancer because Ford changed the balance around 1982. The old 289 balancer probably uses a 3-bolt pulley, where as the 5.0 pulley is a 4-bolt. Ford changed to a 4-bolt crank pulley sometime in the late sixties or early seventies, so finding a pulley that will work with the old v-belts should not be difficult. Intake, headers, engine mounts and accessories should bolt up just fine. Remember not to try to use the 5.0 water pump with a v-belt set up, it will be turning backwords and not pump any water. ------------------ 66 GT Fastback 5.0, 5-speed, 3.40 gears, Fuel Injection soon |
