You don't have to try on a bunch of tires, just call a speed shop. They usaully have a book that indicates max tire & wheel size.
BTW - I believe the stock rim that year is a 14 in. I have a couple of 67 fastbacks. I run 255R1560 on 15x7. They rub a little if the air shocks are low. Point is - get the right wheels (the correct offset) and the right tire. Tirerack has always been helpful to me. Good luck
