![]() Unless you are at TDC on the compression stroke, there can be compression in the valve springs that inhibits testing if the push rods are tight when you tighten the retainer nuts. So there is a chance that without having the piston at TDC, your rockers are too loose. I do not think this would cause permanent damage if you haven't driven much. Pull the valve cover and use the TDC procedure.
