If i were you i would try turning the distributor well the engine is running. If the sound you are getting is like a ping then your timming is to advanced. If that doesnt make a difference make sure all the cylenders are firing. To test that well the engine is running pull of a spark plug wire one at a time to see if the engine runs differently. If you pull of a spark plug wire and it doesnt change the way the engine runs then that cylender is dead. Just because your engine has been rebuilt tdoesnt mean the did it right. Personally it sounds like a tinning prob. I would see if the timing chas has skipped a tooth.
