Just because I don't want to see misinfo get spread around. 67 shelby gt 500 came with the 428 police intercepter engine, 360 hp. in mid 68 the gt 500 switched to the 428 Cobra Jet. These were the famed gt500kr cars. In 69 all 500's were 428 cj's and all 70 shelby's were 69's that didn't sell, were given chin spoilers and dual hood stripes.
Second the 428 is a stroked and bored 390 but they are both FE blocks. 390 shares the stroke of the 427. And if you are thinking 429, and want serious power, the 460 and 514 use the same 385 series block. Rumor mill has it that the 385 series block will fit in a 67 or later car, but I don't have first hand knowledge of that.
