There should be a mark on the balancer, but it could be under some dirt and grime. If not then you need to pull the #1 plug and rotate the engine till you find the compression stroke. If you can rotate it by hand, stick a straw or something similar and feel when the piston is at the top and make your mark.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DROPPED DOWN INSIDE THE CYLINDER!

Once you get this close most people time by ear and a road test to get it just right.
