the T5 got a pretty bad rep from people who missed third gear. When you miss the third gear shift you bend the shift fork. From then on third gear never fully engages. Most of the time this is the death of a T5, sooner or later the box is trashed.
I have also seen plenty of 10 and 11 second cars running T5's without a problem, as shovelnose pointed out. Shoot, I remember talking to Bart Baer way back when they were just starting out Baer Racing, and they were running the stock T5's. They were road racing with these trannies and not having any problems. Stay away from the non-world-class boxes...the pre 87 boxes...or just put up about 1200 bucks and buy a new SHD T5, which is a really sweet box. I've hammered my T5 (stock 89 box) for about 8 years and over 110000 miles (plus the 30k it had when I bought it) and it never complains. The power keeps going up, but the box is holding fine. ------------------ 66 GT Fastback, fuel injected 5.0, 5-speed, cable clutch, JBA's and duals, 3.40 gears and handling mods...just call me "Doc" |
