Pulled out my copy of the Mustang Red Book. According to this source, Mustangs built from the start of production in March of 1964 to August 17, 1964 had either the 101 hp 170cid six (U code) the 164 hp 260cid (F code)or 210 hp 289 with a 4bbl carb (D code) and after June 1st the 271 hp 289 cid (K code) was made avaliable - there was no 2bbl 289 avaliable on the early cars. After August 17, 1964 the 170 six and 260 V8 were dropped and replaced with the 120 hp 200 cid six (T code) and the 200 hp 289 cid (C code. The 210 hp D code was upgraded to 225 hp and was now called an A code. The K code was carried over as is, except the generator was replaced by an alternator.

1965 K code coupe - numbers matching - restoration ongoing. 1987 LX notch, 5 spd, stock heads (minor porting) and intake, 65mmTB, 3.55's, ram air, pulleys, shorty's, 2.5" exhaust with cats 13.89@100.25
