Yes there were 289's in early 65's (known as 64 1/2s). I own one. It was made in early June, of 1964. I took the orignal 289 out ( so I wouldnt feel bad if it blew) and put one from a 66 in it.

289 D codes are almost everybit as hard to find as a 289 K code. D code was made for only 3 months and there were only a few thousand made, I belive production was under 3 grand. Thats one of the reason why you dont see many 64 1/2s with 289's. My car has the correct early hood and head lamp buckets.

I just recently took the generator off and converted it over to an alternator. I'm keeping all the original stuff so if I ever decide to change it back to original. My car has the early passenger side seat that doesnt move, no back up lights (another 64 1/2 only feature), the early horns, and the whole shabang.
