For your first set of problems I think you are on the right track with questioning your fuel pump. Also do a quick check of the plugs and make sure they are all firing correctly. Sometimes a non-firing plug will cause a small backfire when the fumes are lit on the exit. I just went through this a few weeks ago. Also do a check for a partially clogged fuel line or fuel filter.

For your second problem, I'm not sure what to tell you. I haven't run into that problem at all and don't have any personal experience to help you out with. Someone here should know something though.
