Having worked for/close to 2 of the worlds largest equipment manufacturers (Caterpillar and Ingersoll-Rand) I can tell you that while a safety program is given the highest priority, there are many other programs which have nothing to do with being sued.

If your product image goes for a sh*t and sales drop you'll lose more money than getting sued in many cases. Trust me, with bean counters running the companies today that kind of analysis has already been done.
