What year stang is it, My car has trouble with that if your car shifts fine when it is off then when you start it it shifts hard try to use you foot and pull up on the cluth pedal and after that pump it a few times and see what that does if it works it means that your clutch cable needs to be adjusted or replaced your mustang should have a self adjusting clutch it adjusts when you pull up on the pedal this will work untill you can find out if you need a new cable or not you may haft to do this every time you start the car. Also make sure the linkage is lubricatedand moving freely, a bent or misaligned shift rod will cause hard shifting.
