probe GT (comments?)
What does anyone think of the probe GT's?
I am thinking of buying a '93 probe GT. I took one for a drive the other day and was surprised with the amount of power those 2.5 V-6 has!! They handle REALLY WELL. Do you think it would be a good choice next to a mustang? I see it as the next best thing to a mustang. |

Well im sure they handle good and have good economy, but when i was 17 i had a 78 t/a (4spd) with just grs and i smoked one pretty bad, think it was a 91-93 model, but hey these cars arent v8 killers just sporty.

The Probe GT should be able to pull a low 15 pass thru the quarter mile. That's not too shabby at all. Driven well they should give a 96-98 GT a run for it's money. As you noted, they do handle very well.
On the downside the car isn't nice to work on, and it's reliabilty record isn't the best in the business. All in all pretty decent quick little get around town cars that get good gas mileage. Oh, and chicks dig 'em. |

We have a 91 GT turbo. It hasn't had any problems yet (60,000 miles). My wife drove it. I think it is a bit small. Once you are in it, it is comfortable. I also wouldn't recommend ours for a tall person. My head is about an inch from the sunroof and I'm not even 6' tall. It is probably because of the power seats.

I would buy one, but as a daily driver. They aren't exactly dominating the streets, but they have quite a bit of motor for that size car. I would think you could get a TB Super Coupe for just a bit more though. that would be my choice.

I think the T-birds are ugly though. Come on, you must admit they are not as sporty looking as a probe or 'stang. I am also not into the family car Taurus, even if they do haul *** . I already have my '82 GT ready to come out and play in the spring time. What car is left if I want to stay in the Ford line? I am not super Probe fan but just test drive a newer GT Probe and you will be surprised!! I'll admit they are not a V-8 killer but will give some a run for the money with the right driver.

To tell you the truth, performance parts for the second gen Ford Probe/Mazda MX6 are hard to come by. Also, the second gens are prone to a lot of mechanical problems as mentioned above. Another thing you have to think about is labor for simple repairs; it is very high for the V6 Probe/MX6 because of how tight the engine bay is. You would be better off getting the first gen turbo Probes. Any factory turbo car is easily upgradeable and can be made considerably faster if you know what you are doing. Hope I have been some help.

What inferno forgot to mention is the incredible electrical malfunctions that the Probe's had in the first gen group. They were extremely unreliable and they had many tranny problems, something that the second gen cars got rid of for the most part.
The older turbo Probes are slow in stock form, and while you can upgrade them, it's kind of like upgrading an older 2.3L turbo stang. You can do it, but why bother. They are slow from the start, they have weak drivetrains, and they are usually very high mileage cars that have been beaten. |

Umm, I don't think the 91 probe turbo is slow. It would smoke my sister's 79 turbo 2.3 mustang. I think it is like 150 hp and 200 torque. It doesn't sound like much, but the car is small & light. With a $200 superchip it jumps 15 hp and 22 torque. I've also heard you can play with the boost.

Damn Unit, are you stalking me???!!??!! Actually, the second gen probes are just as prone to electrical problems which is made worse by the fact that the engine compartment is extremely tight. It is cheaper to get things fixed on the 1st gens as well. Even simple maintenance is difficult because of the tight engine compartment and a lot of places rack up on the labor on these cars(I was about to buy a second gen Probe before I bought my CRX until I discovered this). The 1st gen turbo cars are slower than the V6 second gen, but the difference can easily be made up with a 3" downpipe, 3" exhaust and an intake. You can also pick up a 1st gen for a lot cheaper than the 2nd gen and with the difference, make the turbo car pretty quick. And on a final note, I have seen a couple of 1st gens run 12's...I have yet to see a second gen run faster than a 14.

Hehe, maybe a little inferno, you're just not nearly as fun to flame anymore. Heh. Anyway, it's true none of the Probes is known for reliability, which is one reason they aren't still being made. I'm pretty sure I've heard of a supercharger kit for the '93-'96 models, with that and N20 they would be well into the 13's. Who cares I guess. It's still wigged out at that point. I don't think any FWD cars are especially fun to work on. Oh man, give me a RWD car anyday. I can swap tranny's on my stang in about 6 hours, it'd be 5 except the BBK H-pipe bites. I think I'd like a little 4 banger Probe for a daily driver. They look much better than the older models, good gas mileage, they handle pretty decent, and they are cheap.
VS a Mustang the only advantage a Probe has is price. |

It must suck that it takes so long to swap tranny's. I can swap trannies inside two hours without air tools. I wouldn't waste my time flamming...you aren't worth the effort.
