![]() 429's seem to be the underserved underdog. While majority of them went into big bulky passenger cars, there were a few performance tunes for the 385 series that are quite stout in stock form. Well at least in 71 when they had the Cobra Jet and SUper Cobra Jet 429's.
Both were made used in the 71 stang, and had pretty stout bottom ends. Came with 4 bolt mains, the SCJ had a mechanical cam, and the CJ had a hydraulic, engines built before 11/1/69 had an adjustable, non positive stop rocker arm stud, so the installation of a mechanical cam wouldnt be all that hard. Both had diffrent heads than the regular production passenger car 429, of course with larger valves, larger ports and I believe a tighter combustion chamber (higher compression). Like the 460, it doesnt take much to wake these beasts up. But yes, the 427 is the ultimate in my books, I must bow down now. ![]() ------------------ 64 1/2 "D" code Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, 3:1 rear gear. Mallory duel point.
