An H pipe is just what it sounds like, just like T-Bone said, it connects the headers/exhaust manifolds to the mufflers.

If you took it off the car, it would look like an H...two pipes running parallel with a pipe connecting the two.
You could also look into getting an X pipe, which is what it sounds like...replaces the stock H pipe and looks like an X...that's as simple as it gets.

As for performance, if you want something you can feel, get gears.
