I assume you will use a base - clear system. Definately the best way to go. Don't skimp on the clear. I used four coats - if you do this you will really appreciate having a little extra thickness when you have to fix minor stuff that hasn't went all the way through to the base. I have been amazed at the ugly scratches that I've been able to buff out.

I used PPG DBU base and PPG clear. In general just make sure you don't use cheap products. The higher dollar stuff will shoot better, will last longer, and you will have much better quality. The DBU can be used on your plastic too without flex agent. So make sure you check to see if the product you use needs to have flex agent added for painting over plastic or moldings.
I'm going on 2 yrs with this paint and it's still in great shape.

Don't just use a cheap primer. And always start with a coat of sealer over the whole car.
