Yeah, I would also be very hesitant to run my car with a low oil level. The main point of the article was the fact that with a normal oil level, the crank "whips" the oil in the pan and heats it up. I suppose the friction from the whipping would also use a little power. Sounds crazy to me. I will continue to use 5 quarts of Mobil 1.....
