SPRINGS ()()()()?

If you're looking for springs that mount in the stock positions (not coilovers), I would recommend H&R. They generally offer 4 levels of stiffness and lowering for each model of Mustang. Since they are progressive, they ride better than many specific rate sets, but they stiffen up nicely when you get into corners.
As far as how much to lower the car, it's not necessarily bad to lower it more than 1", but if you do you will need caster/camber plates and possibly a bumpsteer kit to maintain good geometry.
