They sound *similar* and play *decent* (their action is higher which I hate) but their build and parts quality are quite different. The US strats go for big $$$. A few years ago my friend bought a 1967 Jaguar (all were Fenders were American in the pre-CBS buy-out days) for $700. But as long as it's not a Squire Strat you're in business. You should be able to pull around $300 or so. But I agree with LowDown...to a beginner all guitars look alike.
