A Mustang has a disticnt sound, no matter what exhaust systemn you use. Just the other day I sprang up from my seat and told my wife the car that just passed was a Mustang, and sure enough it was. So, I say it's the car. Not the muffler.
The muffler will "enhance" the tone, but it doesn't "create" it. I'd say it would make any car sound better to put high flow mufflers on it.
