D.S.S or Coast High for new engine
hey guy's I will have over 3 grand soon to spend on my stroker short block. It is going to be an ATI Intercooled Supercharged 347 stroker. I want somewhere between 600 and 700 horses.
Have any of you guys delt with either of these companies to build your engines? I want to know which company would be better for achieving this amount of power and which one will last. I am either going to go with AFR heads or Brodix heads. The intake will either be the Spider intake or the Holley Systemax. Probably 50 pound injectors( will these be to small) and a big throttle body and MAF. Aeromotive fuel system. I am redoing the whole car.(88 lx. it's very light) I was wandering do I have to mini-tub it to have 12.5 inch wide tires underneath my rear. thanks guy's.. let me know what you think of my project.

I've got a DSS stroker kit and it's very nice. What's interesting is that the pistons are Probe (aka Coast High Perf).
I think either company is pretty reputable. E

You will need more then 3 grand for a short block that can hold 700hp. That is SVO block territory, and that will put you around $5500.00 for one of those short blocks.

I never had it on the dyno so I don't know. I'm thinking around 450 now, and when i get my new cam I'll be looking for the 500 or above mark.

You're gonna need more $$$ for a procharged intercooled long block motor that'll hold 6-700 horses. Probably closer to $6-$7500. And that's just on the long block and blower alone. I know you said short block, but if you are considering a DSS motor, might as well get an assembled longblock from them with the AFRs or Canfields. Just my opinion. DSS offers AFRs and Canfields on their longblocks.
I am currently dealing with DSS right now and they are very patient and have answered a lot of my questions. I've heard nothing but great news about them. Their reputation is very high. Also, a friend of mine is running a DSS 4.6 motor in his Kenne Belle blown Cobra (running 11s) and after running Literally 25 dyno pulls, compression has NOT dropped. You may also want to check out WynneSpeed. DOnt' know about their reputation though, but they offer a Dart Block long block setup for a few hundred less then DSS. I would think that 50 lbs injectors is right about where you'd need to be. I can't see you getting by with 12.5" wide tires without doing something to the body.

I think you should be OK with a sportsman block if you don't rev it too high, or better yet a 351 sportsman block.
Does anyone have any expirence with Bennett racing?

Yeah I was also wandering if anyone has herd anything good about WynneSpeed. There stuff looks pretty good. I am going to call both D.S.S. and Coast High and tell them what I am looking into doing and see if they can give me an estimate on a short block.
302 LX Eric- what c.i. stroker do you have? WADS56- is that 450(soon to be 500) at the wheels or at the flywheel?

I've only got to run it a couple times at the track on drag radials with my best 60' a 1.91. I'm racing in a private tuning session with a local Grand Prix group this weekend at my home track, National Trails. Hoping for a 12.5x @ 111 mph!!! Wish me luck. As for the inquiry about Bennett, I've heard that they build some of the baddest Ford motors around, but it'll cost you. Just looking at their ad in MM&FF, it's darn near $10,000 for a 331! A guy I see at the track sometimes has a Bennett built motor - I think it's like a 327 or smaller that runs 8's on a single turbo. Lee Howie is the guy's name. He won the True Street class at Norwalk FFW a couple years ago and has been featured in MM&FF a while back. E

How much $ does an R302 block run?
D.S.S. says that they will build any short block with the Sportsman block for an aditional $1,000 than what it would normally be.

A bare 'R' block will run you $1,600. Add onto that some serious machining costs. It's very expensive, but also rock solid.

If you guys are really looking for a excellent engine builder/racer, and very inexpensive...in No. Ca. we have HAMILTON CLARKE IND. Ph. No. (916) 643-2010. ask for Cole. they built my last motor which now has about 3800 miles on it. They also have a 631 rwhp 99 Cobra playing on the streets. And a 831 rwhp NA viper that road races...jplus many more cars to look at and referance..This is in Sacramento Ca.

The Sportsman 302 block is a 4 bolt main. Is it just as good as the R 302?

New mmotors
NO!...they are not new , but not big time..that's why they can keep the costs down.. A lot of our dyno shops are using Cole @ HMC Ind. for their special head work and engine building...they are planning on web site but not quite yet....Cole also has a 1200 HP lightning motor sitting on the shop floor..they also have designed their own intake manifold ...supposed to give my Cobra another 60 rwhp $1100 ..
