The 302 is a direct bolt in. Just get some v8 motor mounts, a V8 cross member for the tranny and an 8.8 rear end.
Me and a friend took a 4 cylinder car and converted it o a a running, driving fuel injected 5.0 in 14 hours.

I think there is more to it then direct bolt in.. I thought the motor mounts were in a different spot. you'll definetly need to upgrade the suspension and the rear end will probably need beefing up.. I am not 100% for sure.

What about the gauge cluster, the computer if your using a injected motor, and/or any electrics in the engine bay does anyone have like a parts list or the stuff you need to get it running, and is it a true bolt on/in project no welding needed?

It is a carb system I dont need a computer. I already have a double hump crossmember tranny mount, i plan on using the 7.5 until i blow it then i'll worry about an 8.8 or 9". But if you're certain about the motor mounts please tell me. I have some 403 motor mounts but the really dont look like the will work.
thanks |

You have come to the right place. Me and my brother did this in 2002. We went carbed as well. And let me tell you, that weenie ass 7.5 deserves more credit. Now it ain't no stout bull, but it can take some abuse. All you have to do for the swap is change out your fuel sump in the tank. The rest is all bolt in stuff. It is a lot easier going carbed. You need a fuel pump of some sort mechanical or electric. The gas lines start on the pass. side and cross over to the drivers side. You need a double hump crossmember for the tranny. Get standard v8 mounts (I like the convertible mounts myself). If you don't already have this, you need the plate that bolts to the block to bolt to the mounts too. The v8 is a direct bolt in swap. No fabricating of any sort. You can use the stock 4cyl drive shaft. Are you using a t-5 or auto? This really is an easy swap. Like Dark 5.0 said, it can be done in 14 hours. We did it in about the same amount of time. It sure is fun removing that whole wiring harness from the 4cyl.
Scrapla, the only thing that you have to change in the cluster is the tach cause it won't be right for a v8. If you do a fuel injected swap, you don't have to touch the fuel tank sump. But you do have to either run new lines or swap in some from a donor car. The best way to do the swap is buy a donor car for parts. Then you know you have everything you need. Yeah, the whole 4cyl engine harness (including the computer) has to come out. You need a v8 computer and engine harness along with alot of sensors that are not on the 4cyl car. One good thing is if you go 5 speed, the 4cyls have a cable cutch as well. All you do is change the cable. Of course, you will need the corresponding computer for the tranny too. And most of the parts you need you can get from either summit or the local parts stores.

My old 4cyl car did'nt have the double hump trans crosmember. IT is like $65 new but find one from a junk yard for about $15-25 prety cheap. And for the suspention I left mine alone and it was alright. Subframe conectors are a good investment though.

I already have the crossmember and driveshaft for the V8. I am told that the 7.5 is tough enough until you put slicks on it but you wont have posi trac. you could if you wanted to waste about $300+ on a trac lock unit. there is a cheaper route if you have a welder Again I am using a carb I don't need any computer components, all I need is a distributor and a coil. I was told a long time ago that carb was a lot more fun than EFI so thats why I chose it. I am going to use an older 4spd that should handle the 302 power. I am told that the 4cyl 5spd is like tooth picks to a 302. Thanx

What year of 302 are you using? If it is 85 or later, get an 85gt distributor. If it is older, get any year before 85 get an 84 or older distributor. You can use the stock 4 cyl coil. Don't go the points route if you can help it. You will be much better off if you go electronic. And it is very easy to wire up.
I will second that carbs are more fun that efi. I think a carbed motor sounds meaner.

Distributor
I know what kinda distributor to get, I'm really debating on whether to get an accel, mallory or an msd. I was looking on ebay a couple weeks ago and there are a bunch of ppl selling an HEI Distributor for the 289/302. It looks like a quality product but it has no company name, made in australia, and they are sold for about $100-$150. They must not be worth a shit if they're that cheap. Plus I was thinking where would to go to get a replacement cap or any other part for it? If anyone knows anything about these let me know. I have a couple of old autolite distributors, but I doubt they work. I have 2 other 302's and a 351w out of a Gran Torino I cant remember what year though. Both other 302's are an '82 model, but the one I rebuilt was a '79. Well thanks a bunch see ya

I'm also doing a swap project. I would get that 7.5 out and go with a 8.8 with 3.73's or 4.10's. I picked up a nice 8.8 yesterday for $40. I'm going the carb route, I'm sick of all the wires under the hood. If you can swing it toss that k-member, and go with a tubular-coilover setup. That stock k-member weights a ton.
