Wink Another Old stang post..It tries to kill me!!!

As I previously Posted, I found out that storing old cars for long periods creates problems. That or my car is just possessed!

I had a problem with the throttle hanging at first on my 64 1/2. Then it progressed to a bigger my potentially dangerous problem. If I gave it anymore than quarter throttle, the peddle would leave my foot and go to the floor. Ballz to the wall wide open throttle.

No one believed me that it did that, they heard of hanging throttle's but not one to floor itself. Till one night infront of the movie theater ( one of the cruise locations ) I clicked my C-4 into Low and thought I'd put on a little show. SHe was running pretty strong that night. I gave the gas about half throttle blip, but my car had other things in mind.

The throttle went to the floor and wouldnt come up. My 289 screamed alive. Tires spinning and i shot foward. At first I thought no Prob, I'll just stab the gas and it'll come back up. NOPE!!!! There was a explorer stopped at the light that I was approaching rapidly. I jam the brakes and lock the front drums up.

The engine Thunders up to 5200 RPM and climbing. "Oh Sh!t" I thought. The front tires are bieng dragged across the pavement as my rear starts to swerve all over the place. Tire Smoke bellowing up in clouds.

I turn the car off thinking it would shut down. ONCE AGAIN....NOPE!!!! THe engines at 5700 RPMS. I take the key out and hold it in one hand while fighting the car with my other, I stare at the key, then look at the tach. Cars still running WIde open..Diesling along. About 10 Ft from the Explorer, the throttle popps up and the car sits there and idles at 600 RPM.

WTF, I think to myself and put the key back in. My Friends in there mustangs behind me just laughed and yelled about what kinda show I put on.

Tim C drove the car and wittnessed the throttle thing.

This post is getting to long, So i'll end it and tell what the problem was in another.

My mom's old '83 Caprice used to do the exact same thing!!! We'd be driving along and then that damn QuadraJUNK would just go WOT without warning other than the pedal going out from underneath your foot. One time my brother was riding with us, and he just freaked OUT! He was screaming, "turn it off, turn it off!!!" My mum took the key out and put it right in front of his face and said, "it IS off!!!" Hehehe, funny in a boat that'll scoot.

Anyhoo, the problem was the accelerator pump arm and/or the secondary linkage. I suggest you do the same thing. Good luck!

MOTOR MOUNTS!! (Excuse the shouting...) A broken motor mount will cause this to happen. The torque causes the engine to tilt, pulling the accelator linkage, which makes it tilt more, in a vicious cycle. Very scary, especially in a fast car.

I had fixed the problem a week prior to posting this. It was the secondary system. There was no spring behind the diaphram, well that and the throttle springs were extremely week. The lack of spring in the secondary diaphram caused teh secondarys to open at anything over quarter throttle. The air rushing past the throttle plates over powered the week throttle springs and the plates flung wide open.

I put a huge gigantic spring on the throttle and a stretched, cut down spring from a holley kit, in the secondary system. No problems. Well my Secondarys dont operate consistantly. Time to take that modified autolite 4100 off and put a mechanical secondary holley on.

My mind crossed upon the same possiblitly, but the motor mounts were good.

I had something like this happen to my 91 GT AOD. I was on my street about 1/2 mile from my house with my friends in the car @ 10:00pm, and there is a cop who lives never door. I opened the car to WOT and it just stuck there. I passed my house at about 70mph. I put it in Neutral and the tack needle almost spun around so I just took the key out. One of the little $.02 clips that holds the transmission cable and acceleration cable onto the throttle body broke off. So the gas pedal was no longer attached to the throttle body, but had it jammed in WOT. I was able to temporarily fix it with twisty ties so I could get to the bone yard. After walking around for an hour I couldn’t find the clip so I went to ford and they ACTUALLY had the part! It was only $3 for a pack of 2. Oh well.

I'd be more concerned on why the ignition switch didn't shut the damn thing off.

Was the engine that hot that it was dieseling?

A engine doesnt have to be running hot to diesel. Its compression is pretty damn high compared to todays cars. On a Dry cylinder, after the engine sat for two days, it rung up to 10.9:1. I didnt think the Comp. was going to be that high, I guessed a little over 10 and a half to one. I changed my sig accordingly.

That compression alone, at an operating temprature of 190 degress can diesel at the high RPMs. It got up to almost 6000 RPM by the time I killed the ignition.

Hmmm... dieseling at 6000? More likely the ignition switch is just shot. Most engines won't turn 6000 without any ignition at all. Just my take on this.

Well, there are only three possiblities for why my car didnt shut down when I turned the ignition off.

1. Ignition switch is bad. Nope..Its good. Never gave me any problems before, and everything checks out AOK.

2. Diesling. Run a high compression engine on low octane and run her RPMS up. Hold her there for a several seconds, then shut her off. It will diesel.

3. My car is possessed or something.

Hell, maybe it is number 3. Diane, my car, seems to have a mind of her own.
