![]() My car has 170,000 miles on it and is leakin oil i believe where engine mounts to the tranny. And for about a week now the car has been pinging really loud i can have the music up and i can clearly hear it. It pings really hard at 1500 rpm and pretty much doesnt stop till i either come to stop or i turn off the car!
![]() ![]() Which brings me here. What should i do? 1)THere is a guy here in my town that has a 68 302 w/ 4000 miles for 450 o/bo. Would it be able to fit in my 92 gt 5.0?? would it still have the performance of the 5.0 i have right now? 2)I just called schucks/kragen/checkers and the better of there two engines short block is 816.00 w/ my core. I will try to contact a place here that sells used engines and see what they have to say. If you have some input please POST!!!!!!!! ALso i talked to a guy who owns a tow place and he has a 92 stang gt that was rear ended pretty bad for 1300. The car besides the rear end collision is in extremely good shape. the interior is practically new. Every interior piece is in tact. Any ways he told me that the kid who owned it died in the crash but that he had taken the engine to get rebuilt by some1 who built racing engines. I took a look at the blue paint didnt look old at all im just not sure how i would tell how many miles it has on it and if there are any papers. Do you think it's a good deal? The only thing i have a prob w/ is if i were to buy it what would i do w/ everything extra?

![]() I didn't know it was legal to junk cars that people died in? Regardless, the 68 will not perform like a 92, I wouldn't buy a cheap *** rebuilt engine.
I would look around for a salvage yard with a cheap used 87-93 5.0 that has reasonable mileage. Should be able to pick it up for $450 or less. Also, I'd try and figure out what is causing the ping before I jumped in and started swapping engines. What is the future of this car? Are you keeping it, selling it? |

![]() Have you checked your timing? If the timing chain is original, it should be replaced. They tend to stretch out and that throws the timing off, which could cause the pinging. As far as the oil goes, is it all over the top of the transmission or just underneath it? With 170,000 miles on the clock, the engine will probably need rebuilt soon.

![]() Thanks for the quick reply Guys.
Unit i dont know if he ment that he died in the car or in the Hospital. I dont mean to disrespect the dead in any way but there wasnt even any blood in the car. Feel bad bought sayin that! What would be cheap for a cheap rebuilt engine. Do you know any thing about the companys that sell used engines? I want to hit up the JY but there arent any around here that would have a mustang and 87-93 at that!! I have checked the timing and it is at about 10. As for the future of the car i would love to keep it but i have a 7month old son and my g/f doesnt like cuz of the gas and i think she thinks it's ugly. LOL. but i love it besided all the probs im having with it now. I want to keep it b/c i just got it and b/c i wouldnt get anything near what i want for it. SO IT STAYS DAMN WHAT THE WIFE SAYS ![]() ![]() TJR the oild doesnt leak any where else except for the back of the engine where it meets up to the tranny. from what i can see it leaks onto the front of the tranny where it has that aluminum cover....covering the torque conv. LATE!

![]() I'm just saying err on the side of caution. If it comes from a discount parts store, I'd be awfully wary of it. Make sure you know the rebuilder name behind the rebuild job. Try Ebaymotors for a used 5.0 engine, I've seen them come out of WA before. Shipping may be the killer there though.

![]() I wouldn't buy a rebuilt motor. I was considering the same thing when I lost my #8 cylinder, and I'm glad I decided to pick every single part that went into my 306, that started with a bare block and crank. If you can't/don't want to pay for that sort of work, I'd at least have a motor rebuilt by someone you trust.
To my knowledge, they are allowed to scrap cars that are involved in fatal accidents after the police report has been filed, or after any litigations are final. |

![]() A buddy of mine sank his 4X4 Ranger in the river last year and bought a rebuilt motor from Checkers. Ford wanted an ungodly amount of money to install it so he brought it to me and I put it in for him, but I was moving so I just had time to put the long block in it and he had ford finish the job. After all was said and done, he fired it up and had almost no compression and when he went to talk to Checkers they pointed out to him that in the little contract he signed for the motor, it stated that he could only receive $500 back for his time and troubles. So basically he was just SOL and lost about $1000 total after he got the other motor and it runs fine. So IMO, it's a game of luck when you buy a motor from a discount parts place. Just my $0.02.

![]() Sup,
I found a place here in Wa, theyre called ram engines. here is their website. http://members.aol.com/RAMRemfg/Home/sales2.html They told me that for their "silver" edition short block it would be less then 700 dont remember the exact amount and that it would be bored 0.30-0.60? If you have any idea of what questions i should ask let me know!! also how much better is a 306? will still be able to use my OE from my 302 on it?
