Painting bumpers

I want to paint a 98 Red Cobra bumper white. Do I need to sand all the paint off or just wet sand dull. Any help will be appricated

You should just be able to just dull the paint... it will act like primer if you just dull it... you'll be all set...

well that's exactly what Maaco does when they paint, so if you want your paint to bubble and peal then do it that way

you really need to sand as much paint off as possible, then prime it, sand the primer a little, THEN you can paint it

You need to get all the paint off!!!!!!!!! And then you need to go to your local body shop supply store and get what the call adhesion promoter!! Spray that on the bumber before you put your top coat on!! Next you need to also get what the call flex additive and put that in your top coat before you spray it! If you would like more directions in detail just let me know!

actually unless there is a problem with the paint then most body shops WILL NOT strip it all down... try walking into one when they are open and working...

Well you are right but if you want to do it right then strip it down and you won't have to worry about anything! If this car means as much to you as mine does then you will want to do it right!!!

I know what you mean... I started to strip mine before i took it off the road because it was bubbled and peeling... but thats because the jerk that painted it a few years ago didn't use flex in the primer or the paint... I got bumper stripper, but it is a pain to use... so I am pulling it off in the spring and have it bead blasted... then have it painted right...

I agree. I was neither a bodyman nor a painter but I worked at a body shop for a year and a half. It was considered a premium quality paint shop. An average full paint job was about 2000.00 or so.
All we would do is scuff the paint if it was good condition. Damaged was filled, primed and scuffed as well. While we didn't strip anything, the quality was in what we sprayed on the cars. You may not get show car quality but you can get OEM quality without stripping.
