Default resonator on mustang???

i was at my sisters club meeting for the 3G club (third generation eclipses) and the guys were telling me about how they cut off thier resonators before the muffler and put in a straight pipe. then i talked to my sis's b/f who has been workin on muscle cars for like 15 years now. he was tellin me the same thing. he said he doesnt know how many a mustang has but he thinks they are somewhere behind the front wheel and he said if i get them cut off and get a pipe welded in there that it would make the exhuast a little louder. now is that true?? do mustangs have resonators behind the front wheel??

read carefully.

do not listen to rice boys when they talk about modifying cars.

this can lead to desasterous consequences for you and your mustang.

now, back to real life.

resonators... there are two kinds of resonators, intake resonators, and exhaust resonators.

a 5.0L mustang does not have exhaust resonators.

a 5.0L mustang does have 1 resonator on the intake.

this resonator is hidden in the passenger side fenderwell BEHIND the airbox (air filter)..

if you remove this resonator, there will be a slightly louder sound when you hit the gas pedal wide open...

to remove the resonator simply dismantle the airbox, then remove the two screws that hold the other half to the fender.

then, remove the three or 4 small screws which hold the actual resonator (air horn) on the inside of the fender, when you are done removing the screws, pull the resonator out through the bottom of the fender.

then, put the air box back on, screw it in, put your air filter back on, then put the top of the air box back together and snap it in place. !!!

voila ! 5 HP , and a nice throaty sound !

yes that is the air silencer in the fender well, not a resonator. a lot of new cars have resonators on the exhaust that i have seen. the ones i have seen are after the cat and before the muffler. when you put an exhaust system on a car with resonator, it tends to make the car sound like popcorn cooking at higher rpms. at least thats how it sounds on a SHO i have seen, and my buddys Z34.

on a 5.0L mustang there are no silencers on the exhaust pipes.

just 4 catalytic converters and two mufflers.

hey fordfaster if theres anything that you would like to know about the 5.0L, you can do a search on this website by clicking on the search button in the top corner of the forums page. It is a very helpful tool to get info. Whatever you can think of i'm sure theres been a post about it.

Figured I'd throw a couple pennies at this one...

I do exhaust work for a living (if that's what you want to call it). And after that damn movie (you know), I noticed an influx of idiots wanting complete 3" systems fabricated for their P.O.S foreign rides... very amusing to interact with these guys, no real world hands on experience, and get tech info from movies! The best part is them thinking that they'll get it done for a couple hundred bucks. "Dude, I'm getting twin turbos soon, so I need you to put a 3" system on my bone stock eclipse! (oops, I forgot about the head light covers and tinted glass) how much hp is that worth again?

I can't count the number of resonators I've replaced with a length of tubing on imports and some domestics even, since that flic...
I'm not disgruntled, its amusing really, afterall they do have money to spend$$$.

If you own a mustang you have no business getting info from people who drive these type of vehicles and actually believe when they install a fart can (muffler) that their car is faster (and furious?)...

Resonators, ah yes, just another word for glass packs!!
Stay away from those goons, unless you are going to hang around and make fun of them!! (makes me think of that picture I saw on some posts -- "It's called nitrous moron!" naws, dude!)

i actually had glasspacks on my 5.0 before i got the used flowmasters. they were SOOOOO much louder but didnt give they type of sound that i wanted. when i reved up to 6000rpm, it roared with the best. i got the flowmasters which are quieter but give the throaty sound that i love. plus they sound good at lower rpms too.
