I am going to tackle a gear install in my 02GT. It only has about 2200 miles on it, and would like to up the ante to 4.10's. I plan on adding an ATI in the future, but the way I look at is, with 4.10's at 6K rpm's on a 5 spd. car, I will still go low 12's, if I have the power. What do I need to install the gear. I know that I need to set backlash and will need to shim it accordingly, with only 2K miles, how important is it to get the bearings replaced?

I'm no master mechanic, but I would think that you should be OK without replacing the bearings with so little miles.

If you are going the forced induction route, I would HIGHLY recommend 3.73s over 4.10s.

yes I am going forced induction, why 3.73's over 4.10's. What are the downsides of 4.10's that are magnified with a blower? my last car was a 5.0 that I pulled to 6K, blown, with 4.10's and an automatic with a loose converter. It seemed to pull through the traps nicely. Somebody told me that with 4.10's and a blower I would be able to pull respectivly on the highway without downshifting. Also, when I get the blower, I am going to save to get a new block (ticking timebomb with a blower) I am probably going to upgradeto a 4V motor (figure after you P&P 2v heads, and a built short block costs the same, I could have a built short block with untouched 4v heads, and pull to 7K on a blower) The blower is reality one day (not sure how far away) The 4v is a dream, maybe one day in a few years.

I think 3.73's are better for 5-speed car anyway stock or blown. The rule of thumb for late model GT's has been 3.73's for a stick car 4.10's for an auto. Besides, once the blower is one you don't want to top out at half track and be hitting the rev limiter halfway down the track now do you?

SLOW 97, you have to remember the powerband difference on a 99-up car. The 96-98 car's work great with 3.73's, but the powerband is higher in the 99-up cars, which lends it self to a 4.10, just like a cobra is a car for 4.30's. even with a blower, Im not going to go 120mph in the quarter, so I don't need to worry about running off the limiter by the end of the track. If worse comes to worse and I do run out of gear, I go to a 28" tall tire.

I'm guessing you'll be using slicks with this setup at the track...

All modular GTs in my experience, whether they be 96-98 or 99 on, peter out at 5500 rpm stock. Add engine and tranny work there will be a different power curve, but as far as I'm concerned, I shift at 5500 rpm... My main concerns were the same as slow 97.... Also another thing to think about was what I stated above... I guess you're planning to run slicks with this setup, as I find it hard to grab any traction at all in 1st or 2nd with 3.73s and drag radials... (with the ATI set at a lowly 8 lbs. boost)
