Unhappy 8/8- A day of infamy.

One year ago today, at about 12:30 MDT I wrecked my '69 Coupe. The year flew by quickly, about 8-9 months of that year was spent working on my Fastback to replace the Coupe. Nights, weekends, mornings, lunch hours, "sick days" off school, and many others were eligible times to turn some wrenches or do a little body work.

Tonight I am taking the car to the hill where the Coupe was wrecked and getting a few pics of it. I'll post some if they turn out OK.

Well, I just thought I'd do a little retrospecting while I had some time. Hope you all don't mind.

My '69 Coupe--RIP

Get some pictures, and make sure the car is right side up.

Like Sam said, be careful out there, although I'm sure you'll never look at that corner the same.

I definitely look at that corner differently now, along with many other places and areas. It's easier than you'd think to end up on your topside.

Tonight we're supposed to get some street races going, too. I'm a little hesistant about that, being the whole 8/8 thing. But there's gonna be an old Roadrunner (tired Teener 2-barrel), a Nova SS 350 (stock), maybe an old Chevy pickup with a 283 (worked over pretty nicely), and an old Ford with a 302 that's pretty healthy also. The kid with his '92 RS I just raced (and beat) might be coming out there, too. None of these cars can keep up with me, but they all know that. Maybe I'll just take it out there and hang out, but not race it. Maybe I'll race it though, who knows?

I just can't believe it's been a year already. This is going to sound stupid, but Sept. 11 is just a month away. There's no way in hell that seems like it was a year ago, either. Getting old sucks eggs.

Take care,
~Chris

We did have the races tonight, although not with as many cars as we were anticipating. It was just me, an Avenger, the Nova SS 350, and a Roadrunner with a 318 (my cousin).

The Roadrunner raced the Nova, won by about 3 or 4 carlengths. Then the Roadrunner raced the Avenger and blew him away. I started this race and my cousin was screwing around and was burning off his tires as he was staging and launching. He still beat that Avenger off the line.

So it was my turn, I start the car (which was pretty dang hot, only sat for about 20-25 minutes after the 20 minute drive to "Texas" (that story in a bit), turn the park lights on, coast the 30 yards to the start line, do a 3 or 4 second burnout, rev it up to about 5000 RPM to clear the carb and staged. My cousin in his Roadrunner was to my left, staging also. I tached it up to about 1700-1800 RPM (spun when I launched at about 2000 last weekend). At the drop of the starters hand I mashed it and released the brake. I didn't spin at all, rather, I bogged. I still raped him off the line, but I didn't have a very good launch at all. This race wasn't very interesting so I won't go into very many more details, but I ended up beating him by over 10 carlengths.

Anyways, about the "Texas" location. We've named our separate areas we've found for racing by state location corresponding to the actually country. "Texas" is about 15-20 miles south of us. "Montana" is about 10-15 miles northwest of us near the Army igloos. "Colorado" is just outside the southwest part of town, and "Michigan" is about 15-20 miles northeast of town. If we hear something about cops heading to a certain area we head to a different location. Some of the non-racers carry CB radios and direct people where to go. They use the state name instead of the location so the cops don't know where we're headed. Anyone else do stuff like this?

I remeber that day also. I was in school at the time to become a SGT. Glad to see you got the other 69 up and running. Didn't take you anytime at all. Hell it took me over 2 years to get mine going. No telling how long it will be before i get it going again this time. Nice to see you are out there kicking but with it.
