Default '85 speedometer on a tremec TKO

Has anyone ever hooked up an older speedo cable to a TKO? It seems I have apples & oranges that just aren't going to work together. On the car side, the end of the speedo cable is a big plastic "plug" with no gear, and an electrical connection kinda "piggybacked" on the plug part.
Now inside the TKO, I also have a "plug" that's held in with a screw. Once removed it has a gear on it that's held on with a small clip.

The problem is, that the 2 of them will not plug into each other. I even tried taking the plastic plug off of the car's speedo cable, but the cable alone won't even plug into the Tremec.

Any ideas?

On a side note, ran NOS on my stang for the first time friday night. What a hoot!!!
