Angry Tranny Case Crack? Rip off?

Well,
I dropped my car off today at the Ford dealer to get a few recalls taken care of and I asked them to check out my tranny because I noticed a leak. First of all, it cost me $76 just to look at the damn thing.

Then he calls me and tells me that I somehow cracked the tranny casing and it is going to cost me $652 to fix. He said that I must have hit something, even though I don't remember hitting anything.

Doesn't that seem like quite a bit to replace the case on a tranny?

Scott

That does seem a little steep, but it is a Ford dealership. You have to expect to pay out the wazoo.

Go by the dealer. Have them point out the crack. Also don't tell them that you are coming. If they know you are coming they may take a hammer to it so that there really is a crack.

I just wanted to inform everyone of my latest news.

I called my local garage that specializes in Mustangs and other sports cars and here is what they said. They will put a used casing on my tranny for $200 give or take $50, the guy on the phone wasn't exactly sure. But he recommended that I have them rebuild the tranny while they have it apart. For the rebuild and to put another case on it, it would cost me $550. That is $100 less than what the dealer said for just the casing.

Plus the dealer recommended that I get a new clutch at the time also and they were going to charge me twice as much as my garage is going to charge for a King Cobra clutch and install.

I don't understand how they get away with that.

Dealers don't make money on car sales, so they make it up in the shop. Their hourly labor rate is generally higher than an independent garage. They also charge list prices for their parts.

When the transmission is out, check the clutch. If it's worn considerably, replace it now, it will be cheaper in the long run, than to have to pull the trans 2-3-4 months down the road again to replace the clutch.

Cool

I broke the case on my tremac. I took it out to change third gear. took it apart and cleaned everything and was on the way up with it and the top right ear just fell off. I called tremac, the case was $200. I opted to weld mine. While inspecting a little closer the left ear was cracked also. We welded that side too. Now I broke a moser axle, it never ends, it's so fun, Thats why I love it.
